Lables For What?

By Aadya Srivastava

The irrelevant labels that have been thrown on women, no they will not be forgotten. Unless, the apologies are as loud as the disrespect, they won't be forgiven. The voice of the South African AmaXhosa King, that declared women incapable of handling the country's problems is still echoing in the ears of every south african woman who wishes to serve her nation. Nigeria's president, Muhammadu Birdari's wife has still not been able to get over the way she was asked to stay in her husband's kitchen and living room. According to the Turkish President Erdogan and Russian Senator, Milonov, "a woman who refrains motherhood is deficient, incomplete and half-a-person, however successful her working life is!" As a woman, these words by him never fail to raise a question in my head, "Is my existence significant only because I can provide it to another?" Is my life worthy only because I,have the ability to give it to another? And this baffling question is always left unanswered.

When five female airport guards in Kandahar, Afghanistan were gunned down on their way to work in December, a provincial council member said in a facebook post, “Women should stay in their homes with face cover and dignity, a valued position that God has given them.” Afghanistan's women are facing such disrespect since ages.

The irony has shook me. A European Parliament member, Janusz Korwin-Mikke, asserted that "women must earn less than men because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent." This mindset of his, and probably many others, quite very well explains the reason why probably female youth unemployment is double than that of make youth unemployment.

All we ask for is equality. When we put in efforts, we deserve to get equally paid as men. And to make the situations for women in the world from worst to even worse, there exist men who choose to mock sexual violence and all atrocities that women face. Rodrigo Duterte, allegedly lamented the historical rape of an Australian missionary saying "but she was so beautiful!" Does that woman being beautiful make her being sexually assaulted acceptable? We all have often heard women talking about consent and it's importance, While writing this article how can I forget the tweet by a former Dubai police officer that read "when a woman says no, she really means yes." And not just this, there are so many other people tweeting statements like this as if they are humor.

Let us make this clear, no it's not. It's giving the idea to so many uneducated or undereducated people that it is actually true, that even though a women says no, she doesn't really have a problem with being molested. "No, means no" stands true in all cases of both women and men. When I raise a voice against the atrocities that women face, I do not intend to neglect the ones that men face. And as I mention this, I also get reminded of the day when Senator Yelena Mizulina herself quoted that "a man beating his wife is less offensive than when a woman humiliates a man.” Women have lived with this mindset and toxicity of feeling inferior than men, that some of them have actually given up the thought of striving for their betterment and have chosen to believe it. When Donald Trump claimed to use his power and influence to grab women "by the pussy," he was supported in the comment section by Brexit leader, Farage, saying, "it’s the kind of thing, if we are being honest, that men do."

I question, how does having a particular position in a government or organisation give anybody the power to give sexual threats to women? And again, my question, left unanswered. I want everybody reading this article to know, that when women, who speak up for themselves publicly are assaulted, insulted and harassed, it takes away the courage of other women who are oppressed. It takes away the power to speak against the oppression they face each and everyday.

"Everytime a woman is disrespected in public, another woman watches it, observes it and decides to give up. It's not about that one woman who was insulted, it is also about the ones who saw her as their ideal."
